Department of Earth Science

The Department of Earth Science, School of Physical Sciences currently runs the BSc Geological Science Programme.

The Department started as a unit with the Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) in the 2004/2005 academic year, when the University was then the University for Development Studies (UDS), Navrongo Campus.

The first batch of students of the current Department was admitted to the FAS in 2004, fifteen of them at the time.

In 2020, the UDS Navrongo Campus became the C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied
Sciences (CKT-UTAS).

The Programme aims to use Earth Science knowledge for sustainable national development. In doing so, it attempts to teach students practical ways of identifying the earth’s resources and hazardous elements and their impact on Public Health.

To achieve the aims set, the programme was designed to offer opportunities for the general intellectual knowledge and skills required for graduates to function effectively in the areas of mineral, petroleum, water resources and environmental management.

Our Vision

The vision is to see the Department of Earth Science (DoES) grow in our national and international reputation as far as studies and research in geological science education are concerned and become a leader in Ghana and Africa through student learning/success, scholarship, research, and alumni engagement.

Also, to make a positive impact within our region, Ghana and Africa in Earth Science studies, particularly in the fields of mineral and water, resources, petroleum, energy and environmental geosciences. Producing world-class professionals in the minerals/mining, technology and related disciplines.

Our Mission

  • Provide higher education in the minerals and mining, technology and related disciplines
    through effective teaching and learning
  • Provide students with the highest quality education while conducting basic and applied
interdisciplinary research that will prepare them to meet global challenges, and to
    broaden the frontiers of geosciences.
  • Engage students and staff with industry and government agencies to deliver excellence in
learning, leadership, relevant and innovative research, and benefits to society in the
    broader field of geosciences.

Our Core Values

  • Exhibit the highest professionalism in teaching, fieldwork, and services.
  • Embark on mentorship that matters to all our students, School, and staff.
